If you want to drive a vehicle in Korea, you need a Korean driver's license. You can also use an international driving license issued by your municipality of residence (together with the original Belgian driving license and passport - for a maximum of 1 year after arrival in Korea, within the validity date of the document).
In the event of loss or theft of your Belgian driving licence, it is possible to obtain a duplicate of this document in the last Belgian municipality of residence.
Getting a Korean driver's license
It is possible to exchange a Belgian license for a Korean license without passing an exam. The Korean authorities require for this a legalized certificate containing the data of the driving license. You will obtain this certificate from the municipality that issued your driving license (*Please obtain it in English and not French/Dutch/German), and then send it electronically for legalization to the address: info@mobilit.fgov.be
According to the latest information (Direct line from the Driver's License Service, Tel. 02-2075-4127 - website), in addition to this certificate, the Korean authorities request the following:
- Korean Alien Registration Card
- Valid Belgian driver's license
- Certificate of the Facts Concerning Entry & Exit, from the date of birth to the current date
- Belgian passport
- 3 identity photos
- Fees: 8,000 KRW (or 10,000 KRW for an English version) + 6,000 KRW (medical examination) + 8,000 KRW (treatment costs)
